Examining the status of offenses committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan, as ascertained by diplomatic establishments abroad through their Japanese citizen protection services, revealed that 5,267 cases (down 5.8% from the previous year) were committed against 5,703 Japanese nationals (down 4.8% (id.)) in 2011. In 2011 the number of Japanese nationals killed outside of Japan as crime victims was 14 (down four from the previous year) and the number of those injured 181 (up 12 from the previous year) (Source: The Consular Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
