Table 5-1-3-1 shows the number of reported cases (including cases without any resulting damage; hereinafter the same in this section) for robbery, theft, fraud, extortion, embezzlement, and embezzlement of lost property (including cases in which the victims were juridical persons or other organizations; hereinafter collectively referred to as “property offenses” in this section) and the amount of damages resulting from those offenses over the last 10 years. The number of reported cases and the amount of damages increased up to 2002, but then started decreasing in 2003. The amount of damages resulting from property offenses totaled approximately 169.3 billion yen (approximately 72.8 billion yen of which involved cash) in 2010. By type of offense, the amount of damages resulting from theft accounted for the majority at 66.0% of total damages resulting from property offenses, followed by fraud at 24.0% and embezzlement at 8.3%. The largest amount of damages in cash has resulted from fraud since 2004, accounting for 50.3% of total damages in cash resulting from property offenses in 2010.
The amount of damages in cash resulting from theft in 2010 by modus operandi was approximately 12.87 billion yen for burglary theft, approximately 9.72 billion yen for non-burglary theft, and approximately 0.12 billion yen for vehicle theft (Source: Criminal Statistics by National Police Agency).
