Table 4-5-2-1 shows the number of new inmates in penal institutions and juveniles newly admitted to juvenile training schools in 2010 diagnosed as having mental disorders by the type of mental disorder.
Of persons placed under probation/parole supervision (excluding short-term probation for traffic offenses and short-term probation (See Subsection 3, Section 1, Chapter 1, Part 3); hereinafter the same in this subsection) the number of those classified as “persons with mental disorders, etc.” under the categorized treatment system as of the end of 2010 was 1,854 (up 2.5% from the end of the previous year) and the percentage of probationers/parolees 4.7% (Source: The Rehabilitation Bureau, Ministry of Justice). Probation offices provide advice to those probationers/parolees in ensuring that they are provided with the appropriate medical and welfare treatment, when needed, while also cooperating with medical/welfare institutions and their families.
