Examining the status of offenses committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan, as ascertained by diplomatic establishments abroad through their Japanese citizen protection services, revealed that 5,589 cases (up 1.7% from the previous year) were committed against 5,989 Japanese nationals (up 0.3% (id.)) in 2010. Table 1-5-2-1 shows the number of cases committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan by type of offense in 2010.
In 2010 the number of Japanese nationals killed outside of Japan as crime victims was 18 (same as the previous year) and the number of those injured 169 (up one from the previous year) (Source: The Consular Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
