Examining the status of offenses committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan, as ascertained by diplomatic establishments abroad through their Japanese citizen protection services, revealed that 5,495 cases (down 1.4% from the previous year) were committed against 5,970 Japanese nationals (down 0.5% (id.)) in 2009. Table 1-5-2-1 shows the number of cases committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan by type of offense in 2009.
In 2009 the number of Japanese nationals killed outside of Japan as crime victims was 18 (down four from the previous year) and the number of those injured 168 (down 80 (id.)) (Source: The Consular Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
