3 Property damage

  Table 5-1-1-3 shows the trends of reported property offenses (robbery, extortion, theft, fraud, embezzlement and embezzlement of lost property; hereinafter the same in this section) and the amount of property damage (including cases in which victims are corporations or other organizations and bodies) over the last 10 years.

  The trends over the last 10 years show that both the number of reported property offenses and the amount of property damage were on an upward trend until 2002, but have been decreasing since 2003. By type of offense, the amount of damage by theft was largest in 2007, accounting for 63.1% of the total. The percentage of property damage by fraud was 29.4%, and that by embezzlement was 4.9%. The amount of damage in cash by fraud increased significantly in 2004, and in 2007, the amount accounted for 58.9% of the total.
  By modus operandi for theft in 2007, the amount of damage in cash by burglary theft was about 17.01 billion yen, while that by non-burglary theft was about 14.68 billion yen and that by vehicle-related theft was 0.18 billion yen (Source: Criminal Statistics by National Police Agency).
