2 Violence in schools

  The number of cases of juvenile violence in schools and that of juveniles cleared or guided by police decreased to 448 in 1996 after hitting peaks with 2,125 cases in 1983 and with 10,468 juveniles in 1981, respectively. Since then, the number of cases remained between 500 and 1,200, while the number of such juveniles remained between 1,000 and 1,600. In 2007, the number of cases was 1,124 (up bye 2.2% from the previous year) and the number of juveniles was 1,433 (down by 1.5% (id.)). Most of the cleared or guided juveniles were junior high school students every year. In 2007, junior high school students were 1,245 (86.9%), followed by high school students at 161 (11.2%), and elementary school students at 27 (1.9%) (Source: The Community Safety Bureau, National Police Agency).
