First of all, as examples of homicide by repeat offenders, the following five cases are introduced as sample cases with the most common criminal motive and cause that are discussed later in this chapter, Section 2-2. “First-time case” means the first homicide committed by the repeat homicide offender (hereinafter the same in this chapter), and “repeat case” means the second homicide case (hereinafter the same in this chapter). Amongst the 128 subjects, there were eight persons who had three records of homicide, for whom the analysis was made treating the second homicide as “first-time case” and the third homicide as “repeat case”. There were no persons with more than four homicidal cases.
Case 1: Homicide with anger and passion under intoxication with alcohol
First-time case
At
a restaurant, a quarrel with an acquaintance escalated to a fight where the offender
hit the
other's
head more than ten times in an attempt to kill but failed.
Repeat case
While
drinking alcohol, the offender became enraged with the victim who was another
customer,
claiming that the victim glared at him persistently. The offender went to fetch
his gun
and
returned to the scene, shoving the gun at the victim with threats. Believing the
victim
insulted
him by taunting to shoot if possible pointing to his own stomach, the offender
shot and
killed
the victim.
Case 2: Homicide in antagonistic fights between Boryokudan Group
First-time case
In
conspiracy with a fellow Boryokudan member, the offender ambushed a rival Boryokudan
member
on the street and shot him to death.
Repeat case
Hearing
that his Boryokudan leader's life was the target of the leader of another
Boryokudan,
the
offender conspired with a fellow Boryokudan member, shot and killed the other
Boryokudan
leader.
Case 3: Homicide by revenge/grudge against neighboring resident
First-time case
Disturbed
by a neighbor who frequently disparaged him, the offender became enraged when
the
neighbor yelled at him, and killed the neighbor using a sickle he was carrying.
Repeat case
When
accused of cutting a barb wire of neighbor's home without permission of the
neighbor
with
whom he had had troubles repeatedly, the offender brought out a kitchen knife,
stabbed
and
killed the neighbor.
Case 4: Crime of passion (troubles with girlfriend)
First-time case
Unable
to trust his girlfriend, the offender proposed to die together rather than to
break up.
Upon
being turned down, the offender strangled her with a cord to death.
Repeat case
Suspicious
that his girlfriend was dating with another man, the offender accused her and,
upon
being
shunted, the offender became desperate, stabbed her with a kitchen knife to death.
Case 5: Homicide for greed (homicide at the scene of a robbery, etc.)
First-time case
Hard-pressed
for repayment of debts, the offender intruded into an office with the intent to
steal,
but was discovered by the victim. The offender attempted to kill the victim by
strangling
the
victim with a towel and stabbing the victim's abdomen but failed.
Repeat case
In
order to obtain money for living and entertainment, the offender broke into the
victim's
resident
but was discovered by the victim while searching for money, etc. To escape from
being
arrested, offender stabbed the victim to death with a knife in the kitchen and
robbed
money,
etc.
