4 Probation and parole supervision

  Foreign probationers/parolees newly received in 2006 were 2,100, a decrease of 1.6% from 2005. A breakdown by region shows that foreign probationers/parolees from the Asian region have the largest share, followed by those from South America, and those from the two regions accounted for more than 96% of the total. By nationality, etc., the Chinese (including Taiwanese) were the largest in number with 668 persons, followed by South/North Koreans with 574, Brazilians with 284 and Iranians with 98 (see Appendix 3-5).
  The number of newly received probationers/parolees who were visiting foreign nationals in 2006 was 1,602 (up by 1.5% from the previous year), and by type of supervision, prison parolees (1,258 persons) were the largest in number, followed by juvenile probationers (239 persons), juvenile training school parolees (76 persons), and offenders given suspension of execution of sentence with probationary supervision (29 persons) (Source: Annual Report of Statistics on Rehabilitation).
  Fig. 3-1-3-7 shows the number of foreign probationers and parolees excluding juveniles (excluding permanent residents and special permanent residents; hereinafter the same in this subsection) as of the end of each year over the last 10 years (for foreign juvenile probationers and parolees, see Part 4, Chapter 2, Section 7).

  The number of foreign probationers and parolees had generally been on the rise, but remained flat since 2004. In 2006, the number slightly decreased from the previous year.
  As of the end of December 2006, 850 of 909 foreign prison parolees had been classified as to be deported, among whom, 4 parolees had been accorded provisional release, 102 persons detained, and 744 already deported (Source: The Rehabilitation Bureau , Ministry of Justice).
