3 Correction

  In 2006, 2,062 convicted foreign nationals were newly admitted, a decrease of 10.6% from 2005 (Source: Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
  Foreign national inmates who need treatment different from that for Japanese are categorized as Class F and treated according to culture and customs in their countries.
  Fig. 3-1-3-6 shows the number of newly admitted Class F inmates over the last 10 years.

  Class F inmates had increased rapidly since 1998, but the number decreased for two consecutive years from 2005.
  By nationality, etc., Chinese (including Taiwanese) were the largest in number with 538 persons, followed by Brazilians (161 persons), South/North Koreans (133 persons), Iranians (80 persons), and Vietnamese (79 persons) (see Appendix 3-4).
  Of Class F inmates newly admitted in 2006, theft had the largest share with 398 persons (29.5%), followed by Immigration Control Act violations with 361 (26.7%), robbery with 143 (10.6%), Stimulants Control Act violations with 107 (7.9%), counterfeiting of documents with 35 (2.6%), Road Traffic Act violations with 35 (2.6%) , breaking into a residence with 31 (2.3%), homicide with 29 (2.1%), injury/assault with 26 (1.9%), fraud with 26 (1.9%), and Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act violations with 22 (1.6%) (Source: Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
  As of December 31, 2006, the number of Class F inmates was 3,669 (3,359 males and 310 females), an increase of 64 persons (1.8%) from December 31, 2005 (Source: Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
