Table 1-4-2-1 shows the number of reported cases, crime rate, and clearance rate of homicide committed in each of the 5 countries since 1997 (see Appendix 1-14 and 1-15 ).
Although there are some discrepancies in the constituent elements of homicide in each country, if we view the statistics under this charge, both the number of reported cases and crime rate of homicide in Japan has been the lowest among the 5 countries, except for the number of reported cases in 1998 being larger than that in the U.K. On the other hand, the clearance rate in Japan maintained a high level over 90% along with that in Germany. The clearance rate in the other 3 countries has been on the decline while repeating rises and falls.
