Table 1-4-1-1 shows the number of reported cases, crime rate, and clearance rate of major offenses in each of the 5 countries from 1997 to 2001 (see Appendix 1-13 and 1-15 ).
  Though the number of reported cases and crime rate of major offenses in Japan are remarkably lower than those in the other 4 countries, the number of reported cases in Japan has noticeably increased in recent years. The number of reported cases rose from the previous year in all countries in 2001.
  On the other hand, the clearance rate declined from the previous year in all countries.
