White paper on crime 2002 Part 5/Chap.2/Sec.1/2

2 Trends by region

By prefecture, the sum of the numbers of reported cases for general penal code offenses in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Aichi, Osaka, Hyogo and Fukuoka accounted for about 60% of the total in 2001. Compared with the data of 2000, the number of reported cases in Osaka increased significantly (Criminal Statistics by National Police Agency).
Fig. 5-2-1-2 shows the trends in the rate of increase/decrease of the number of reported cases for bodily injury, by prefecture. The numbers for bodily injury include less statistical errors because relatively more cases are reported for bodily injury than for other types of offenses. During the period from 1991 to 1996, the member of reported cases showed a declining trend in more than half of the prefectures and no particular difference was seen between prefectures. However, during the period from 1996 to 2001, the number increased in all prefectures except for Kochi, with a notable increase in Miyagi, Tochigi, Mie, Osaka and Okinawa.
