Table I-3 shows the number of cases reported, the crime rate, and the clearance rate for homicide in the various countries over the three years from 1996 to 1998.
Although there are some discrepancies in the compositional definition of homicide in each country, if we view the statistics under this basic heading, the crime rate is lower in Japan than in the other four countries. The clearance rate, meanwhile, remains at a high level of more than 95%, higher than in the other four countries.
