White Paper on Crime 2024 Part7/Chapter3/Section2
This section compares males and females to clarify the characteristic trends of female inmates.
The percentages of female inmates under 65 years of age who answered “seeking a job but out of work” and “unemployed” for employment status in the year immediately before physical custody such as arrest are 5.6% and 32.0%, respectively. Those of male inmates are 6.2% and 13.2%.
Fig. 7-3-2-1 shows the reasons for not working, by male/female, for persons under 65 years of age who answered “seeking a job but out of work” or “unemployed” for employment status (numbers in some cases are double counted). Female inmates have a higher percentage of “health reasons”, which suggests that many female inmates were unable to work due to unstable mental or physical health conditions.
