2 School violence
The number of cases of school violence reached a peak of 2,125 in 1983 and the number of juveniles cleared/guided by the police for school violence reached a peak of 10,468 in 1981, but then both started decreasing and accounted for 448 cases and 897 juveniles respectively in 1996. Both numbers have generally been on an increasing trend in recent years. In 2008 the number of cases was 1,212 (up 88 or 7.8% from the previous year) and the number juveniles cleared/guided by the police was 1,478 (up 45 or 3.1% (id.)). Examining the number of juveniles cleared (guided by the police) by educational/employment status revealed that junior high school students dominated in number in each year. In 2008 the number of junior high students was 1,320 (89.3%), that of high school students was 142 (9.6%), and that of elementary school students was 16 (1.1%) (Source: The Community Safety Bureau, National Police Agency).
