Chapter 5  Offenders with Mental Disorders

Section 1  Trends in Offenses

  Table 3-5-1-1 shows the number of persons with mental disorders, etc. (refers to those who have or are suspected of having a mental disorder; hereinafter the same in this section) cleared for non-traffic penal code offenses by type of offense in 2008.
  Of 339,752 persons cleared for non-traffic penal code offenses 1,288 (up 1.4% from the previous year) had mental disorders and 1,571 (up 3.4% (id.)) were suspected of having a mental disorder. The percentage of persons with mental disorders, etc. was 0.8%. By type of offense, the percentage for arson (14.3%) and homicide (10.2%) were both high.
