1 Death penalty and life imprisonment with work

  Table 2-3-2-1 shows the number of persons sentenced to death penalty and life imprisonment with work in the court of first instance by type of offense over the last 10 years. Note that no one has been sentenced to life imprisonment without work in the last 10 years.

  The sentence of death penalty has been limited to homicide or robbery causing death (including homicide on the occasion of robbery) over the last 10 years. The percentage of persons sentenced to death penalty among those convicted in 2008 was 0.6% (three persons) for homicide (excluding participation in suicide, homicide with consent, and preparation; hereinafter the same in this subsection) and 2.7% (two) for robbery causing death (Source: Annual Report of Judicial Statistics and the General Secretariat, Supreme Court).
  The percentage of persons sentenced to life imprisonment with work among those convicted in 2008 was 2.9% (16 persons) for homicide and 6.7% (42) for robbery causing death or injury and rape on the occasion of robbery. Persons sentenced to life imprisonment with work for other offenses included one person for arson, two for rape causing death or injury, and two for Stimulants Control Act violations (Source: Annual Report of Judicial Statistics and the General Secretariat, Supreme Court)
