Section 2  Offenses Committed against Japanese Nationals Outside of Japan

  Examination of the status of offenses committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan, as ascertained by diplomatic establishments abroad through their Japanese citizen protection services, revealed that 5,574 cases (down 2.1% from the previous year) were committed against 5,998 Japanese nationals (down 3.6% (id.)) in 2008. Table 1-5-2-1 shows the number of cases committed against Japanese nationals outside of Japan by type of offense in 2008.
  In 2008 the number of persons killed outside of Japan as crime victims was 22 (up four persons from the previous year) and the number of persons injured was 248 (up 11 persons (id.)) (Source: The Consular Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
