3 Fines

  Table 2-3-2-3 shows the sentencing of fines (excluding those imposed together with imprisonment with or without work; hereinafter the same in this sub-section.) in trials (ordinary trial procedure and summary proceeding) in district, family and summary courts in 2007.

  Most of the persons sentenced to fine went through summary proceedings.
  In the case of summary proceedings, a majority (422,758 persons accounting for 76.6%) of those who were sentenced to fine in 2007 were for violations of road traffic related acts.
  In the case of ordinary trial procedure, among persons sentenced to fine in district, family and summary courts in 2007, those for theft were the largest in number at 482 (17.1%), followed by those for injury at 453 (16.1%) and violations of road traffic related Acts at 431 (15.3%). The numbers of those who were sentenced to fines of 1 million yen or more were 299 in district courts and 15 in summary courts (Source: Annual Report of Judicial Statistics).
