2 Overview of Post War Criminal Trends

Before going into the details of the actual circumstances and attributes of the One Million No-Repeat and Repeat Offenders' Recorded Convictions, an overview of the trends with post war offenses by grouping the people with the top ten offenses, for about every ten years, will be given, and whether custodial sentences (imprisonment with or without work and misdemeanor imprisonment without work) or financial sanctions (fines and petty fines) were imposed (Table 7-3-1-2).
The ranking of offenses where custodial sentences were imposed is as follows: theft remained at first throughout the period, then violations of the Stimulants Control Act at second from 1980, while injury, fraud, and extortion came third, fourth, and fifth, with no change in ranking over the pertinent years. Of offenses where financial sanctions were imposed, injury continued to rank first throughout the period while assault was ranked second on a relatively large number of occasions. However, large varied changes took place in the ranking of other offenses over the period.
