Section 5 Nongovernmental Support Organizations and Crime Prevention Activities
1 Nongovernmental support organizations
(1) BBS Associations
Big Brothers and Sisters (BBS) associations are voluntary organizations of young people who assist juvenile delinquents and juveniles having troubles for their sound self development by relating to them as their older brothers or sisters. As of April 1, 2007, there were 535 BBS associations and 4,543 members (Source: The Rehabilitation Bureau, Ministry of Justice).
(2) Women's Association for Rehabilitation Aid
Women's Associations for Rehabilitation Aid are volunteer organizations that support the sound development of young people and the rehabilitation of offenders and juvenile delinquents, as well as crime prevention in communities from a woman's perspective.
As of April 1, 2007, there were 1,316 local associations and 192,255 members (Source: The Rehabilitation Bureau, Ministry of Justice).
(3) Cooperative employers
Probationers, parolees and those who receive urgent aftercare have difficulties in finding regular employment due to their history of crime or delinquency etc. Cooperative employers are volunteers who employ these people with understanding of their circumstances and cooperate in their rehabilitation.
As of April 1, 2007, there were 5,778 cooperative employers including individuals and companies, and 685 probationers/parolees were employed. By type of industry, the construction industry accounted for 53.5%, followed by the manufacturing industry (14.6%), and the service industry (9.5%) (Source: The Rehabilitation Bureau, Ministry of Justice).
