2 Number of inmates of penal institutions

   Fig. 2-4-1-2 shows the trends in the rate of imprisonment in the average daily number of inmates in penal institutions over the past 20 years.
  The average daily number of inmates in penal institutions registered the lowest record after the WW II at 44,876 in 1992, but has been on an increasing trend since 1993. It registered 80,335 in 2006 (up by 2,403 (3.1%) from the previous year) (see Appendix 2-5 for the number of inmates in penal institutions after 1950).

  Table 2-4-1-3 shows the number of sentenced inmates newly admitted and released in 2006, by reason.
