As of December 31, 2005, 1,439 adult and juvenile probationers and parolees were classified as having mental disorder (see
Part 2, Chapter 5, Section 2, 2 (2)) (up by 11.1% from December 31, 2004), accounting for 2.8% of overall probationers and parolees (excluding short-term probationers for traffic offenses and ordinary short-term probationers) (Source: The Rehabilitation Bureau, Ministry of Justice). Probation offices provide them with appropriate treatment considering their mental conditions, by advising them to receive proper medical care or welfare measures according to need and by cooperating with medical/welfare organizations and their families.
