According to data ascertained by diplomatic establishments abroad through their Japanese citizen protection service, 6,352 offenses were committed against Japanese nationals outside Japan in 2005 (down by 0.9% from the previous year), involving 7,070 Japanese nationals as victims (down by 1.8% (id.)).

The number of Japanese nationals killed outside Japan as crime victims has ranged within 10-30 since 1995, and was 24 in 2005. The number of those injured due to crimes has been around 300 every year since 2001, and was 307 in 2005.
