4 Fines

  Table2-3-3-3 shows the number of defendants sentenced to fines(excluding those concurrently sentenced with imprisonment with or without labor.The same applies hereafter.)in district,family and summary courts(ordinary trial procedure and summary trial procedure)in2004.
  Most of the defendants were sentenced to a fine through summary trial procedure.
  In2004,the number of defendants sentenced to a fine through summary trial procedure was749,279.Out of these defendants,a majority of81.7%was for violations of road traffic related laws,followed by11.8%for professional negligence.The number of defendants sentenced to a fine of less than100,000yen was431,517(57.6%),out of which99.2%was for violations of road traffic related laws.
  The number of defendants sentenced to a fine of200,000yen or more through summary trial procedure increased greatly from184,173in2002to255,238in2003,and was more or less on the same level in2004at240,695.The number of those sentenced to a fine of200,000yen or more for violations of road traffic related laws has also increased from961in2001to104,406in2002,166,766in2003and151,547in2004(Source:Annual Report of Judicial Statistics).This is due to the amendment of the Road Traffic Law(effective from June2002)that increased penalties.
  The number of defendants sentenced to fines of one million yen or more in district courts was299(Source:Annual Report of Judicial Statistics).
