2 The first instance

   Table 2-3-2-2 shows the number of defendants finally disposed in the first instance by district and family courts in 2002, by type of offense and type of final disposition. Table 2-3-2-3 shows the number of defendants finally disposed in the first instance by summary courts in 2002, by type of offense and type of final disposition. Among the total of defendants finally disposed in the first instance in 2002, 86,630 (9.2% of the total) were disposed by ordinary proceedings and 851,155 (90.8%) were by summary proceedings. A large majority of defendants were disposed by summary proceedings.
  The number of defendants finally disposed by district courts increased by 3,932 (5.6%) from the previous year to 74,192 in 2002. By type of offense, most defendants were disposed for Stimulant Drug Control Law violations (17.9% of the total), followed by larceny (13.1%), road traffic violations (11.6%), and bodily injury caused by negligence (10.5%).
  The number of defendants finally disposed in the first instance by family courts for adult criminal cases against the welfare of juveniles increased by 22 from the previous year to 291 in 2002. Most (271 defendants) were for Child Welfare Law violations, 13 were for Labor Standards Law violations and 7 were for violations of the Law on the Prohibition of Minors' Drinking Alcohol (Source: Annual Report of Judicial Statistics).
  The number of defendants finally disposed by summary courts in ordinary proceedings increased by 1,173 (10.7%) from the previous year to 12,147 in 2002. Most of the defendants sentenced to imprisonment with labor (95.1 %) were for larceny, and defendants sentenced to fine for bodily injury and for road traffic violations accounted for about 25% respectively. The number of defendants sentenced to fine or minor fine in summary proceedings decreased by 40,637 (4.6%) from the previous year to 851,155. By type of offense, most of these defendants were convicted of road traffic violations, accounting for 83.9% of the total defendants disposed in summary proceedings.
