White paper on crime 2002 Part 1/Chap.4/Sec.2

Section 2 Homicide

Table 1-4-1-2-[2] and Table 1-4-2-1-[1] show clearance rates, reported cases and crime rates for homicide committed in the 5 countries since 1988.
Although there are some discrepancies in the constituent elements of homicide in each country, if we view the statistics under this basic heading, the number of reported cases for homicide in Japan has been lower than that in the U.S.A., Germany, and France. As for Japan, the number of reported cases has stayed at almost the same level as U.K. since 1991. Crime rates, however, have been markedly lower than the other 4 countries.
On the other hand, in terms of clearance rates for homicide, Japan has maintained higher clearance rates than the other 4 countries since 1988. In 2000, the clearance rate in Japan was 94.3% and surpassed that in France, U.K., and the U.S.A., though falling below that in Germany (95.3%).
