1. Fatal and bodily damage

  Table II-26 shows the trends in the number of victims who were killed or injured in penal code offenses reported by the police over the last ten years since 1991 and the damage rate (see Appendix II-13 for the number of dead or injured by type of offense).

  A terrorist incident, the Sarin gas attack, was perpetrated on Tokyo subway trains on March 20, 1995, and 11 people including passengers were killed and a large number of people were injured in the incident. The above number for 1995 includes the number of those killed or injured in this incident. In connection with this incident, followers of the Aum Shinrikyo cult have been prosecuted for homicide or other offenses (see Part II, Chapter 3 for hearings and sentences in trials concerning the series of incidents involving Aum followers).
