5 Protection of victims, etc.

  For the protection of victims in the course of criminal investigation and public trial, intimidation of a witness is stipulated as a criminal offense to prevent forced interviews for no justifiable reason or intimidation by word or gesture. Release on bail may not be allowed if there is sufficient ground to suspect that the defendant may harm or intimidate the victim, or the victim's friends or relatives. If a defendant does resort to such acts, the release on bail can be canceled.
  The code of conduct concerning criminal investigation by the police stipulates that measures must be taken to protect victims. Under the Law concerning Compensation for Damage to Witnesses, etc. , the government shall provide medical treatment and other benefits if a witness, etc. , in a criminal case is injured or killed in connection with his or her testimony, appearance in court, etc. (see Section3of this Chapter).
