Inmates sentenced to imprisonment with work are legally obliged to engage in work. Inmates sentenced to imprisonment without work or penal detention may work at their requests. The average daily number of inmates engaging in work was 45,968 in FY2017. In the same fiscal year, 48 vocational training subjects, such as construction machinery, welding, automobile technic, information processing technology, and care work, were available, with 13,786 inmates having completed the training and a total of 7,644 inmates obtaining qualifications or licenses to be welding technicians, boiler engineer, information processing engineer, etc. (Source: The Correction Bureau, Ministry of Justice).
