Foreign nationals who violate certain provisions of the Immigration Control Act, including illegally overstaying, etc., face deportation procedures (including departure order procedures; hereinafter the same in this subsection) that enforce their deportation from Japan. The number of foreign nationals whom deportation procedures were used with in 2010 was 24,213 (down 25.9% from the previous year). By type of violation, illegally overstaying was the largest at 18,578 (76.7%), followed by illegal entry at 3,867 (16.0%), and engaging in activities other than permitted by their visa status at 751 (3.1%). By nationality, etc., the largest number were from China (30.1%), followed by the Philippines (20.9%), and the Republic of Korea (13.3%) (Source: The Immigration Bureau, Ministry of Justice).
