3. Concerns about Crime and Crime-preventive Measures

  The2004survey also asked respondents concerns about crime and crime-preventive measures.The following are the results compared with the2000survey results.

(1) Concerns about crime

(i) Safety in walking alone at night

  The surveys asked respondents"How safe do you feel when you walk alone after dark in the area where you live?" Fig. 3-1-2-4(1) compares the results in2004and2000.In2004,the percentages of those who feel"very unsafe"and"somewhat unsafe"increased,while the percentages of those who feel"very safe"and"somewhat safe"decreased,indicating people's growing feeling of unsafety when walking alone at night.

(ii) Safety in being alone at home at night

  In the surveys,respondents were asked"How safe do you feel when you are alone at home after dark?" Fig. 3-1-2-4(2) compares the results in2004and2000.In2004,the percentages of those who feel"very unsafe"and"somewhat unsafe"increased,while the percentage of those who feel"very safe"decreased,indicating people's growing feeling unsafe in being alone at home at night.

(iii) Worry about encountering burglary at home

  On worry about encountering burglary at home,respondents were asked:"Think about the possibility of a burglar entering your home within the next one year.Is it very possible,possible,or impossible?" Fig. 3-1-2-4(3) compares the results in2004and2000.In2004,the percentages of those who feel it is"very possible"and"possible"increased,while the percentage of those who feel it is"impossible"decreased,indicating that worry about encountering burglary at home is also growing.

(2) Crime-preventive measures

Respondents were asked whether they had a burglar alarm or took any crime-preventive measures at home. Fig. 3-1-2-5 compares the results in2004and2000.In2004,the percentage of those who have"no security device at home"decreased,while the percentage of those who take some crime-preventive measures increased.
