Section2 Imprisonment in Penal Institutions

1. Convicted inmates in penal institutions

  As of December31,2003,the imprisonment capacity of penal institutions was69,694including52,783for convicted prisoners,and the actual number of imprisoned inmates was73,734including61,534convicted prisoners.
  Although the ratio of the actual number of imprisoned inmates to the capacity in overall penal institutions was105.8%,down by0.7points from the previous year,more than80%of penal institutions had an excess number of inmates(Source:Data by Correction Bureau,Ministry of Justice).
