2. Characteristics of designated organized crime group members who were newly imprisoned

(1)Type of offense
  Table II-20 shows the top ten offenses committed by designated organized crime group members and by non-members who were newly imprisoned in 2000.

(2)Term of imprisonment
  Among newly imprisoned inmates in 2000, looking at the percentages by term of imprisonment for designated organized crime group members who were sentenced to imprisonment with or without labor, most of them were sentenced to over one year but two years or less, accounting for 40.0% of the total, followed by those sentenced to over two years but three years or less with 24.3%, over six months but one year or less with 13.9%, over three years but five years or less with 12.0%, over five years with 6.1% and six months or less with 3.8%, in that order (Source:Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
(3)Age
  Among newly imprisoned inmates in 2000, examining the percentages by age for designated organized crime group members, most of them were 30 years of age or over and under 40 years of age with 35.9%, followed by those 20 years of age or over and under 30 years of age with 24.6%, those 40 years of age or over and under 50 years of age with 20.1%, those 50 years of age or over and under 60 years of age with 16.8%, those 60 years of age or over with 2.5% and those under 20 years of age with 0.1%, in that order (Source:Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
(4)Frequency of imprisonment
  Among newly imprisoned inmates in 2000, by looking at percentages by frequency of imprisonment for designated organized crime group members, those imprisoned"for the first time"accounted for 31.7%, those for the"second time"17.6%, those for the"third time"12.9%, those for the"fourth time"10.1%, those for the"fifth time"7.7%, those for the"sixth to ninth time"16.3%, and those for the"tenth time or more"3.6% (Source:Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
