Section 3 Sentiments, etc. , of Inmates Related to Organized Crime Groups

  The Research and Training Institute of the Ministry of Justice has conducted a questionnaire survey to identify the behavioral tendencies of inmates related to organized crime groups, as well as their willingness to quit the groups. The survey covered male inmates who were to be released from prisons reserved for the treatment of Class B inmates in the period between November20,1999and February20,2000. In total, the survey covered2,825persons(including744inmates related to organized crime groups).
1 Previous Experience of Delinquency, Matters Leading to Incidents, etc.
  As regards the experience of juvenile delinquency, bullying, etc. , the percentages of organized crime group-related inmates who had experienced"drug use, ""accession to a delinquent group, ""violence towards parents and siblings, "and"bullying of other juveniles"exceeded those of other inmates by5%or more.
2 Willingness to Quit Organized Crime Groups, etc.
  When asked how they were going to handle their relationship with the organized crime groups to which they had belonged, a majority(57.4%)of the inmates who reportedly received guidance on quitting the groups replied that they would not return to them, and only27.0%responded that they would. In contrast, more of the inmates who reportedly did not receive any such guidance(49.4%)answered that they would return to the crime groups, while only31.6%replied that they would not.
