Fig. III-13 Trends in Number of Juveniles Adjudicated by Family Courts and Female Ratio for Pre-Delinquency (1969-1999) The number of juveniles adjudicated for pre-delinquency consistently exceeded 3,000 in the early 1980s but has been in a downward trend ever since. It fell below 1,000 in 1994 and stood at 856 as of 1998.Major types of pre-delinquency include running away from home, promiscuity and association with delinquent peers, among others. Despite a downward trend in the actual number, running away from home has almost consistantly accounted for the largest share in total pre-delinquency cases, amounting to41.4%in1998. The female ratio remained at a high level of around60%from1977,with a temporary downward trend in the early1980s. However, it was below60%in1997and1998. By age group, junior juveniles had the largest share in pre-delinquent cases in1998for both males and females, namely44.6%for males and51.2%for females. They were followed by intermediate juveniles(29.9%for males and39.8%for females)and senior juveniles(10.1%and3.9%, respectively). |
