Fig. 1-5-1-1 shows the trends in the number of persons traveling overseas from Japan since 1950.
With the exception of 1998, the number of Japanese travelers overseas has been consistently increasing since 1992. In 2001, the number fell by 1,602,933 (9.0%) from the previous year to 16,215,657. By gender, males accounted for 54.8% and females for 45.2% of the total number. Additionally, by age, 13.3% was for persons aged 25-29 years, followed by 11.8% for persons aged 30-34 years, and 11.0% for persons aged 50-54 years. As for persons aged 25-29, the number of female travelers (1,280,523 persons, 59.4%) numbered around 1.5 times that of male travelers (875,150 persons, 40.6%).
