Section5 Treatment of Juvenile Inmates

1 Number and characteristics of juvenile inmates

  Juvenile inmates who are sentenced to imprisonment with or without labor serve their sentence in juvenile prisons or in a specifically designated section in ordinary prisons.As of April1,2005,juvenile prisons are set up in eight locations:Hakodate,Morioka,Mito,Kawagoe,Matsumoto,Himeji,Nara,and Saga.
  As of December31,2004,64juveniles are imprisoned including two females(Source:Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
  Fig.4-4-5-1 shows the number of newly admitted juvenile inmates.
  The number was84(an increase of16juveniles from previous year)in2004,including two females.

  Fig.4-4-5-2 shows the percent distribution of newly admitted juvenile inmates in2004,by age.
  There were no juvenile inmates under16from2001to2004.
  Fig.4-4-5-3 shows the percent distribution of newly admitted juvenile inmates in2004,by term of sentence.
  Among84newly admitted juvenile inmates in2004,82received indeterminate sentences,all of whom were sentenced to imprisonment with labor.By type of offense,injury was largest in number with23(two for injury and21for injury resulting in death),followed by robbery with20(three for robbery and17for robbery resulting in death or injury),rape and rape resulting in death or injury with10,professional negligence with10,and homicide with six(Source:Annual Report of Statistics on Correction).
