Trends in major types of larceny according to the number of reported cases As for the trends in the numbers of reported cases by the major types of larceny, (those reported cases over 10,000 every year over the last decade), the increase in the following types of larceny was prominent:Among theft from houses, theft from unoccupied property and theft from offices;among vehicle theft, car theft and bicycle theft;and among non-invasive larceny, theft from vehicles, theft from vending machines, and snatching. The numbers of reported cases of theft from unoccupied property and of theft from offices, both of which are frequently committed by professional offenders took an upward turn recently. After hitting a low in 1997, the number of reported cases of theft from unoccupied property started to rise, increasing by 47.6% in three years from 1998. The number of reported cases of theft from offices also started to show an upward trend in 1989,increasing by 51.7% in three years from 1998. In past several years, there has been a sharp rise in the number of reported cases of theft from unoccupied property and theft from offices with the use of sophisticated lock-picking tools and techniques. Furthermore, more cases were reported for safe cracking (up 353.9% since 1988) and for pick-pocketing (up 16.7% in the last two years), both of which are frequently committed by professional offenders, and for shoplifting (up 68.4% since 1992), which is generally committed in a habitual manner.
