1 Crime victim benefits system

Based on the Act on State Compensation for Victims of Crime, etc. (Act No. 36 of 1980), the government pays crime victim benefits to bereaved families of those who are killed and to those victims who are seriously injured or disabled by offenses.
Furthermore, in regard to this system, requirements on providing seriously injured or disabled crime victims with benefits have been relaxed, and the period for the benefit provision has been extended, and restriction on the benefit provision relating to crimes between relatives has been relaxed, since April 1, 2006 under the Basic Act on Crime Victims and the Basic Plan for Crime Victims, etc.
