Section 3  Property Damage

  Table 5-1-3-1 shows the trends of reported property offenses (robbery, extortion, theft, fraud, embezzlement and embezzlement of lost property) and the amount of property damage (including cases in which victims are corporations or other organizations and bodies) over the last 10 years.
  Both the number of reported property offenses and the amount of property damage were on an upward trend between 1996 and 2002, but have been decreasing since 2003. By type of offense, the amount of damage by theft was largest in 2005, accounting for 71.4% of the total. The percentage of property damage by fraud was 22.3%, and that by embezzlement was 4.3%. The amount of damage in cash by fraud increased significantly in 2004, and in 2005, the amount accounted for 47.4% of the total.

  By modus operandi for theft in 2005, the amount of damage in cash by burglary theft was about 24.49 billion yen, while that by non-burglary theft was about 21.19 billion yen and that by vehicle-related theft was 0.25 billion yen (Source: Criminal Statistics by National Police Agency).
