3 Fines

  Table 2-3-2-3 shows the number of defendants sentenced to fines (excluding those cumulatively sentenced with imprisonment with or without work. The same applies hereafter.) in district, family and summary courts (ordinary trial procedure and summary trial procedure) in 2005.
  Most of the defendants sentenced to a fine went through summary trial procedure.
  In 2005, a majority of 80.9% defendants sentenced to a fine through summary trial procedure were for violations of road traffic related acts.
  Among defendants sentenced to a fine through ordinary trials by district, family or summary courts in 2005, those for violations of road traffic related acts accounted for the largest portion at 24.0%. The numbers of defendants sentenced to fines of one million yen or more in district courts and summary courts were 316 and seven, respectively (Source: Annual Report of Judicial Statistics).
