Section2 Trend in Non-traffic Penal Code Offenses Excluding Larceny

  Fig.1-1-2-1 shows the numbers of reported cases,cleared cases,persons cleared,and clearance rate for non-traffic penal code offenses excluding larceny over the last30years.
  The number of cases reported for non-traffic penal code offenses excluding larceny has increased rapidly since2000,and exceeded500,000for the first time in2003after WWII,reaching the postwar high at581,463(up by26,863(4.8%)from the previous year)in2004.
  The number of cleared cases has increased since2001,reaching219,940in2004,up by5,231(2.4%)from the previous year.The number of persons cleared has also been rising since1997,and it increased by5,639(3.0%)from the previous year to194,146in2004.The numbers of cleared cases and persons cleared were the largest since1970and1971,respectively.Nevertheless,the clearance rate,which used to be around90%,has been on a declining trend,unable to keep up with a sharp increase in the number of reported cases,registering the lowest level in the postwar period at37.8%(down by0.9points(id.))in2004.

  Fig.1-1-2-2 shows the numbers of reported cases,cleared cases,persons cleared,and clearance rate for non-traffic penal code offenses excluding larceny,by type of offense,over the last20years(see Appendix1-2 and 1-3 ).
