Section3 Arrest and Detention of Suspects

  Table 2-2-3-1 shows the arrest and detention of suspects in cases disposed by public prosecutors(excluding cases of professional negligence in traffic accidents and road traffic violations)by type of offense in2003.
  The percentage of those suspects who were arrested and detained by the police etc.or by public prosecutors was32.7%.The percentage was the highest for robbery,followed by rape,Stimulant Drug Control Law violations,homicide,and extortion.
  Some 93.6%of detained suspects were due to requests from public prosecutors.Judges rejected0.3%of detention requests from public prosecutors.
  Excluding cases of professional negligence in traffic accidents and road traffic violations,persons who were subject to detention requests from public prosecutors have grown.It was105,394in1999,115,625in2000,121,696in2001,129,345in2002,and138,900in2003(Source:Annual Report of Statistics on Prosecution).
