Section 2 Imprisonment in Penal Institutions

1 Trends in the average daily number of inmates etc.

   Fig. 2-4-2-1 shows the trends in the average daily number of inmates of penal institutions since 1983 (see Appendix 2-5). The average daily number of inmates has been on an increasing trend since 1993, and it increased by 3,939 (6.2%) from the previous year to 67,354 in 2002.
   Table 2-4-2-2 shows the number of inmates imprisoned and released in 2002, by reason for imprisonment or release.
