Chapter 3 International Comparison on Fear of Crime and Crime Prevention Awareness

Section 1 Current Status of Fear of Crime and Crime Prevention Awareness in Japan

1 Overview

The International Crime Victimization Survey (ICVS) is conducted in order to provide information regarding fear of crime and crime prevention awareness. The ICVS is conducted almost every 4 years, mainly under the initiative of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute. In the fourth ICVS conducted in 2000, about 50 countries and regions participated. The Research and Training Institute of the Ministry of Justice conducted a survey from February 2000 within the framework of the ICVS 2000.
Though the 2002 White Paper on Crime refers to the questionnaires used in the ICVS, some alterations were made to them in the actual survey conducted in Japan.
