4 Fines

   Table 2-3-3-3 shows the number of defendants sentenced to fines by the judgments in first instance (including summary orders) in 2001.
  The number of defendants sentenced to fines of less than ¥50,000 accounted for 24.7% of the total. The number of those sentenced to fines less than ¥100,000 accounted for 83.0% of the total, and most of them (98.7%) were for road traffic violations. The number of those sentenced to fines of ¥200,000 or more accounted for 7.8% of the total, and 74.3% of them were for bodily injury caused by negligence, followed by road traffic violation, bodily injury and Firearms and Swords Control Law violation.
  By type of offense, 84.6% of the total defendants sentenced to fines were for road traffic violations, followed by bodily injury caused by negligence (10.4%).
