3. Imprisonment with or without labor for a limited term

  Among the defendants sentenced to imprisonment with or without labor for a limited term by district courts in 1999 and 2000, most of them (43.0% in 1999 and 42.8% in 2000 of the total) were sentenced to one year or more but less than two years, followed by those sentenced to two years or more but three years or less (24.4% in 1999 and 25.0% in 2000), less than six months (14.0% in 1999 and 13.9% in 2000), and six months or more but less than one year (12.2% in 1999 and 11.6% in 2000). Only 3,795 defendants (6.3%) in 1999 and 4,423 (6.6%) in 2000 were sentenced to imprisonment for more than three years. Among them, 178 (0.3%) in 1999 and 269 (0.4%) in 2000 were sentenced to more than ten years. By type of offense, 109 of them were for homicide and 33f or robbery resulting in death or bodily injury in 1999 while in 2000, 149 were for homicide and 67 for robbery resulting in death or bodily injury (see Appendix II-4 ).
