Section 1 Survey on Damage Causedby Crime1

1 Overview

Periodicalsurveyshavebeenconductedinmajor industrialized countries such as the U. S. A. and U. K. in order to identify the degree of damage caused by crime. Such surveys reveal how frequently each category of offense has been committed, including a dark figure, which are offenses not reported to the police.
Within the framework of the International Crime Victimization Survey(ICVS)2000,led by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, the Research and Training Institute of the Ministry of Justice conducted a survey from February4th to29th,2000,on crime victimization through interviews based on a questionnaire. The aim was to identify trends in crime(risk of crime victimization by type of offense, reports to the police, fear of crime, etc. )more clearly, as well as making an international comparison on crime victimization.
The survey covered3,000men and women aged16or over, selected at random nationwide to avoid any bias in terms of regional and urban/rural representation. Valid responses concerning damage to individuals and households caused by crime were obtained from2,211of the3,000respondents, including1,073men(48.5%)and1,138women(51.5%), giving a response rate of73.7%.
The results of the survey are shown, in principle, as percentages of the total number of responses(=100).
